| Reservoir connectivity studies Characterisation of reservoirs as well as studies on reservoir continuity can be achieved using various techniques. Among these, reservoir oil fingerprinting obtained by gas chromatography (GC) of crude oils is one of the less expensive, less risky and less time consuming methods. To overcome the possible biased results implied by the use of classical approaches, we have developed a new methodology, called the “distribution method” to compare GC fingerprints on the basis of solid theoretical guidelines and on consistent quantification of the uncertainty on the peak heights measurements |

| Oil spills identification GC/MS analyses are widely used to perform environmental forensic studies and to investigate the source of oil spills. This technique is based on the comparison of chromatographic fingerprints to correlate spilled oils to suspected sources. The combination of chemical identification on chromatography analysis of oils with statistical methods leads to a reliable approach to resolve environmental forensic questions. |

Biodegradation Study
Biomarkers analysis is of great interest in the description of the origin of petroleum oils. Identification and quantification of these compounds in GC and GC/MS chromatograms is at the basis of numerous studies. For example, identification and quantification of specific biomarkers can be directly used to study the level of biodegradation of different samples. |

Oil Source Rock Correlation
Several biomarkers can be studied to determine the depositional environment and lithology of the petroleum source rocks. The corresponding cross-plots and ternary plots can directly be generated and manipulated into Malcom, giving a straightforward interpretation of the crude oils from GC and GC/MS chromatograms. |
